Breaking: The Dalton School Is in a Full Meltdown

The Dalton School, one of the most prestigious private schools in Manhattan, is in the throes of a full-on racial meltdown. The precursor of this, as first reported by Bloomberg News, was the school refusing to reopen even while most other public and private schools in New York did. (This despite the lack of any scientific evidence suggesting schools were significant vectors for COVID 19.) Parents signed an angry letter, saying that the $54,000 annual tuition, none of which was being rebated, should buy something more than Zoom classes.

Possibly relenting under the pressure, Dalton has announced plans to reopen, but this has ignited another firestorm, this time from the faculty.

Apparently, reopening is racist.

The charge has been leveled by black faculty and staffers. They suggest, among other things, that faculty of color are more at risk from having to come to work. The reasoning is that they have, on average, more distant commutes and therefore expose themselves longer to risky public transportation.

But that's just the start of Dalton's problems.

Over one hundred faculty have taken the opportunity to issue a lengthly set of racially-based demands that are breathtaking in their wokeness. Black students have added their own demands.

These demands, which have been obtained exclusively by the Naked Dollar, go on for eight pages, and have as their underlying assumption that Dalton is systemically racist. Dalton's teachers are refusing to come back until they are met. Parents are in an uproar, some threatening to remove their children. Major donors are said to be balking. The board, filled with New York movers and shakers, is in turmoil. The Naked Dollar has learned they have contracted an outside consulting firm to advise on handling the crisis.

Here is just a sample of the demands:

  • The hiring of twelve (!) full time diversity officers
  • An additional full time employee whose "entire role is to support Black students who come forward with complaints."
  • Hiring of multiple psychologists with "specialization on the psychological issues affecting ethnic minority populations."
  • Pay off student debt of incoming black faculty
  • Re-route 50% of all donations to NYC public schools
  • Elimination of AP courses if black students don't score as high as white
  • Required courses on "Black liberation"
  • Reduced tuition for black students whose photographs appear in school promotional materials
  • Public "anti-racism" statements required from all employees
  • Mandatory "Community and Diversity Days" to be held "throughout the year"
  • Required anti-bias training to be conducted every year for all staff and parent volunteers
  • Mandatory minority representation in (otherwise elected) student leadership roles
  • Mandatory diversity plot lines in school plays
  • Overhaul of entire curriculum to reflect diversity narratives

The demands for additional staffers alone would add millions of dollars to Dalton's annual budget. Siphoning off 50% of donations would dry up funding. Eliminating AP classes (referred to as "leveled courses") would destroy college admissions. It's not an exaggeration to say these demands, if implemented, would destroy Dalton altogether. According to insiders, much damage has already been done.

What you may not know is that Dalton has long been one of the most progressive schools in the country. They have actively encouraged the sort of thinking that is now biting them in the ass. And the obvious irony is that if Dalton is "systemically racist," a belief they themselves promote, it is progressives who bear the responsibility.

When progressive institutions embrace revolutionary ideologies, as Dalton has done, they fail to appreciate that the revolution comes for them first. The scaffolding is being built on East 89th street.

We'll see how this plays out.

Here are the teacher demands in full.

    1. Now that Biden and Harris are in office, this B.S. will be happening at every level of education, from pre-school and upwards. Yea for the Black Nazis and their white supporters. 10 years and all white people will be deported from the USA ... and they deserve it. The Neanderthals have won.

    8. Why would you think it's bs? This type of garbage is happening all over the place. 1619 propaganda project being inserted into curriculum, Washington talking about & now areas in California deciding who can go back to school first by race.
In my kids school, they can't go, but the ESL kids are.
College campuses left & right(Look up anything to do with Berkley, Evergreen College just for a couple)have the most ridiculous events, demands, policies, ect. being put into place. Like segregation or "No white people" days. Getting people like speakers or teachers either banned from visiting or fired for doing things like...not being a progressive nutjob.
It's all so damn ridiculous it seems made up...but sadly it's not.

Not including others in this dialogue and having this secret document out there without transparency from the school and a respect for all members of the community who pay the bills. Disgraceful. Fire Jim best and all teachers who refuse to do their job. Enough is enough

  5. By not immediately firing/expelling anyone who made any of those ridiculous demands, they sealed their own fate. What rich white parents are going to want to pay 55K a year for that?

  6. This is part of our current racial mania where we make ever greater efforts to discover and root our the white supremacist leprechauns that are unseen and yet all around us. A fascinating question to ponder is how, when and why it will grind to a halt.

  9. Again, this is only a crisis for the school because it's run by dithering, other-directed fools and the obnoxious faculty know it. Tell the bleating faculty they have academic freedom - if they don't care for the school's policies, they're free to work somewhere else. By some accounts, the Dalton School pays handsome salaries. It's doubtful these faculty brats are going to improve their situation if they storm off; most of them realize that; as for the rest, let 'em learn the hard way.

  11. Remember Judith Martin: "What are you running there? Or, since Miss Manners deals in manners and not in morals, what do you want to appear to be running?" Well, the headmaster (the vogue is now 'head of school') is "Jim" Best. This is what he wants to appear to be running.

I don't think the life of the mind will be injured if this man is no longer organizing a little corner of it under the corporate name 'Dalton School'. Let it die. It is spiritually defunct already.

  21. I have nothing to do with your school or community but happened upon this news story. I read the letter and it is beautifully written and thoughtful. If it doesn’t make sense to you, then you are either willfully ignoring or denying the fact that this is a valid point of view. Just because you disagree with it does not mean you are right. And I’m sorry but your extreme wealth makes it highly likely that you are used to hearing what you want to hear. You probably think you deserve all of the money you have. And other people deserve whatever they have. Just a reality check from those of us outside your world: we all think of you categorically as rich assholes. Anyone paying close to half of what I owe on my mortgage for my condo for their school’s tuition can just shut up about issues of fairness and equity. You are disqualified from any conversation about social justice.

It is neither, of course. It is the issue of 'minds' who haven't a clue why the larger society might think teachers do useful work.

Didn't matter about money or status. Dalton (used to?) value ALL students. Sounds like the they're losing that ideal... so sad.

  22. And yes I do think I deserve the money I do have as I have worked my whole life for it and no one made any exceptions for me based upon the color of my skin. To suggest that black people need special assistance to compete is insulting to all the hard working black and minorities who make it in the world without having to implement reverse racism against white people. Good luck with your mortgage. lol

  26. The Dalton School needs to stand strong and give the teachers until 12/28/2020 to decide if they want to continue working there. If they don't respond, then fire them and hire new teachers. It should be the same for the students. If they don't show up to school, after a certain amount of absences, expel them. See how well having an expulsion on your student record does for gaining access to higher education.

Stop capitulating to insane demands from the "woke" crowd!! Once you stop giving in, they'll stop demanding. Treat the "woke" crowd as you would a child. Pit them in timeout if necessary.

  27. Every ethnic community in this country has faced barriers to success, economic, social, cultural, religious, educational. Every one of them is well-represented in the ranks of those who CONTRIBUTED to their cities, states, country, the world. None of them made excuses for unacceptable animalistic behavior or claimed that it was justified by what had happened in their own lifetime, let alone that of previous generations. They worked very hard for what they accomplished, and never blamed anyone else for their failures.

No one is "entitled" to success; they have to work for it.

No one is "entitled" to be destructive either.

Bussing did not achieve integration; neither will any demands for anything. The definition of integration is parts that come together as a whole. It means that just as Caucasians should not look at Chinese, Irish, Polish, Swahili, Congolese, Haitians or any of a thousand other ethnicities as less than human equals, so should the same be the case in reverse. You don't bring a person close to you with threats and demands.

If, however, that is not the desired outcome, those who are making such demands should have the intellectual honesty to say so.

  28. Why not just cut to the chase and make the school's student population 50% black?

Each Dalton parent will foot the bill for a deserving, needy student. This is a totally serious proposal, not a bit snarky.

    1. Then it would seem that African-Americans have some exceptional individuals who have overcome the barriers to success and that the best thing that the black community could do is emulate those people, not demand to be coddled. The playing field is leveled now. The barriers are self-imposed.

      Delete
    2. "emulate"

      Agree 100%.

      "The barriers are self-imposed."

Today yes, but not the historical ones to which I obliquely referred. No other community has been the subject of three constitutional amendments. No other community was the subject of numerous laws whose purpose was to restrict the movements of their daily lives.

  30. The devolution of the black race in the USA with it's attendant average low levels of attainment in education, profession, income, safe neighborhoods and the myriad social pathologies that present are the result of the ever increasing % of babies born into single parent households, which runs about 80%. This is not an outcome that is predicated on race. For instance, black families immigrate here (illegally) from many countries. These families come with Mother, Father and children. They hit the ground running and do quite well in terms of raising successful law abiding children. The problem in our black community is sociological: A matriarchal society has been created (thanks to welfare), wherein the children are on average born into material and spiritual poverty and never escape. Their absent fathers brag about having children from several different women and bear zero responsibility for the outcomes. (They are abetted by a society at large that does not insist on one's being responsible one's actions - just the reverse). Until the specific underlying cause of the devolution of the black community (black women bearing children out of wedlock) is reversed, the situation must only continue to devolve. All the typical and pitiful calls for early and better education, more police - less police, race based policies to favor one color or another, more money for welfare, et al; only hint at the symptons, never the issue. In fact, those policies are what have helped create the problem and continue to make it worse. So until the underlying reason for the devolution is accepted and dealt with, I sadly predict the problem will continue to look worse as time goes by.
